Pastured Poultry

It all comes down to health

It's your health.  Pasture raised chicken is healthier for you and your family.  When chickens have full access to pasture, they eat grass, weeds, bugs and other stuff chickens were meant to eat.  This decreases the unhealthy saturated fats found in typical confinement raised meats and increases the amount of healthy Omega-3 containing unsaturated fats.

It's the planet's health.  By raising chickens in a pasture focused setting, they get up to 20% of their calories directly from the land.  This reduces grain consumption which is better for everyone.  It also allows the nitrogen rich manure to be fed back into the land which grows more grass which sequesters more carbon.  In traditional confinement poultry operations, the manure is a liability and has to be trucked off and processed and can lead to waterway pollution.

It's the bird's health.  There's no doubt many of you have seen the horrifying images from CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation).  This is one of the reasons my wife and I were actually vegans for almost 10 years.  Chickens were not meant to be raised in confined spaces with no sunlight or access to grass.  Our chickens spend their whole life (after the 3-week brooding period) outside on pasture.  This makes for a happier, healthier, and tastier chicken.
